Lena Dunham slams claims she molested her sister

#LENA Dunham, the creator of hit television series Girls, has slammed claims by a right-wing American website that she molested her younger sister. This is the passage in question: “One day, as I sat in our driveway in Long #Island playing with blocks and buckets, my curiosity got the best of me. Grace was sitting up, babbling and smiling, and I leaned down between her legs and carefully spread open her vagina. She didn’t resist and when I saw what was inside I shrieked.” “My mother came running. ‘#Mama, Mama! Grace has something in there!’ “ “My mother didn’t bother asking why I had opened Grace’s vagina. This was within the spectrum of things I did. She just on her knees and looked for herself. It quickly became apparent that Grace had stuffed six or seven pebbles in there. My mother removed them patiently while Grace cackled, thrilled that her prank had been a success.”

Lena Dunham discusses her book at the New Yorker Festival last month in New York City. Ph
The review states: “Lena Dunham’s sexual abuse, specifically, of her younger sister, Grace, [is] the sort of thing that gets children taken away from non-millionaire families without Andover pedigrees and Manhattanite social connections. Dunham writes of casually masturbating while in bed next to her younger sister, of bribing her with ‘three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds … anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl I was trying.’ At one point, when her sister is a toddler, Lena #Dunham pries open her vagina — ‘my curiosity got the best of me,’ she offers, as though that were an explanation. ‘This was within the spectrum of things I did.’”

Brittany Maynard ends her life

#Brittany Maynard, the 29-year-old who said she had terminal brain cancer and would take medication to end her life under Oregon's "Death with Dignity Act," has died, advocacy group Compassion & Choices said in a Facebook post Sunday. "Brittany chose to make a well thought out and informed choice to Die With Dignity in the face of such a terrible, painful, and incurable illness," a post on her website said. "She moved to Oregon to pass away in a little yellow house she picked out in the beautiful city of Portland."

Brittany Maynard ... ... ‘Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity’.
She is survived by her faithful, practical, and kind husband Daniel Diaz, her loving selfless mother Deborah Ziegler and honorable step-father Gary Holmes. And by Dan’s loving supportive family, parents: Carmen and Barry and brothers: #David, Adrian, and Alex. All of whom she adored and loved very deeply. While she had longed for children of her own, she left this world with zero regrets on time spent, places been, or people she loved in her 29 years,” the organisation said. The full statement can be read here. Some of her family took to #Facebook to pay tribute to Maynard.

Burkina Faso's military has announced emergency measures

#Burkina Faso's military has announced emergency measures - including the formation of a transitional government - after a day of violent protests. Demonstrators angered by President Blaise Compaore's bid to extend his 27-year rule earlier set fire to parliament and government buildings. Protesters in the capital, Ouagadougou, are calling for him to resign. The emergency moves announced by army chief Gen Honore Traore did not say who would lead the interim administration. At a press conference, he declared the imposition of an overnight curfew, as well as the dissolution of parliament.

Gen Traore announced that a "transitional body [would] be put in place in consultation with all parties". "A return to the constitutional order is expected in no more than 12 months," he said. Earlier, President Compaore issued a statement, declaring the emergency and saying that the head of the armed forces was in charge of implementing the decision. The protests in the capital - the most serious yet against Mr Compaore's rule - forced MPs to abandon a vote aimed at allowing the president to seek re-election in 2015.

The military fired live bullets to try to disperse protesters who had occupied parliament, our correspondent says. Protesters also surged towards the presidential palace, and a government helicopter flying overhead fired tear gas at them, Reuters news agency reported. Witnesses say dozens of soldiers joined the protest in Ouagadougou's main square, including a former defence minister, Gen Kouame Lougue. Protesters demanded his installation as president, our reporter says.

Kaci Hickox defies excessive Ebola

The fight between a Maine NURSE under Ebola-quarantine orders and authorities intensified on Thursday, as the NURSE defied state orders and went for a bike ride with her boyfriend. The nurse, Kaci Hickox, has argued that forced 21-day isolation orders are medically unnecessary and violate her civil rights. She has hired two New York City-based attorneys to fight Maine’s orders that she stay isolated indoors until 10 November. The governor of Maine said he would back down if she agreed to take a blood test, but the standoff continued on Thursday.

“We have been in negotiations all day with the state of Maine, and tried to resolve this amicably but they will not allow me to leave my house and have any interaction with the public even though I am completely healthy and symptom-free,” said Hickox from her front porch in Fort Kent, at a press conference on Wednesday evening. Armed state troopers have been guarding Hickox’s house since Wednesday, standing outside with a huddle of REPORTERS. Maine state police followed Hickox on her bike ride with boyfriend Ted Wilbur to monitor her interaction with the public. The Associated Press REPORTS that Maine state police cannot arrest Hickox, because they have not obtained a court order to do so. In an interview with ABC News, Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine, said he would back down if Hickox took a blood test. “This could be resolved today. She has been exposed [to Ebola] and she’s not cooperative, so force her to take a test. It’s so simple.” The governor later said negotiations between Hickox’s attorneys and the state failed, and he would continue to pursue legal action. In a statement, the governor said he would allow quarantined healthcare workers to “walking or jogging in a park,” but would not allow them to attend public gatherings, travel or come within three feet of others. The state is likely to seek confidentiality on any paperwork it files with local courts.

Silva ahead of schedule with recovery

Luis #Silva,  #DCU's D.C.#United’s co-leading scorer, is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a strained hamstring and might return to active duty in time for the playoff opener Sunday, Coach Ben Olsen said Tuesday. Silva had been ruled out four to six weeks after suffering the injury Oct. 12 in Houston, a setback that figured to sideline him until the Eastern Conference finals, should United advance.
Realistically, Silva would not return, at the earliest, until the second leg of the series the following weekend. After all, he has yet to resume practicing. But the pace of his recovery has brightened the outlook.
(DCU)Silva and Fabian Espindola share the team lead in goals with 11 apiece and forged an innovative partnership that has bolstered United’s attack since August. In Silva’s absence, Espindola has paired with Johnson, an adequate but less fluid mix. In the two matches Silva has missed, Johnson posted a goal and assist against Chicago and Espindola scored a late equalizer at Montreal on Saturday.
The two-game conference finals would not begin until Nov. 22 or 23. (MLS will recognize the official FIFA period for international competition and not schedule any games Nov. 15-16.)

Australian cricket team cling on against Pakistan

IT was interesting there for a while, but in the end Australia’s defeat in Dubai was inevitable.
#Pakistan finally got the last wicket with 22 overs remaining to win the first Test by 221 runs. A draw, unlikely as it seemed, would have been heroic but hardly a fair reflection of the five days of cricket played here.
#Australia now has no hope of winning the series with the second and final match to be played in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
While Mitchell Johnson had been at the crease there had been hope, but the bowler’s casual defiance came to an edge when he was judged to be a millimetre out of his crease by the third umpire in the last session.

Pakistani players celebrate after Australian batsman Mitchell Johnson was stumped during
Johnson was only the third Australian batsman, after David Warner and Steve Smith, to pass 50 in the game. Seven Pakistanis achieved that mark and more may have if they had not declared their second innings closed.
Johnson was out stumped on 61 — the highest scorer in the innings — after 162 minutes and 127 balls. It was such a close thing the third umpire looked at replays for what seemed like an eternity before making a call.
Peter Siddle was out caught off his pad with the total on 221.
Zulfiqar Babar finished with 5-74 but was assisted in the victory by young leg spinner Yasir Shah who took 4-50 on debut.
#Australia went to the tea 8/196 and has a minimum of 29 overs to survive in the last session.
Steve Smith batted the best part of four hours for 55 before being beaten by the drift of Yasir Shah 30 minutes before tea.
Yet again he showed his partners how to handle spin, while Johnson’s stay will have the top order shifting uncomfortably in their seats. The bowler has been lucky on a couple of occasions but for the most part has looked confident and competent where few of those who are picked to bat had.

Burnley aim for first win when they host Everton on

#Burnley will be looking to earn their first win of the season when they welcome Everton to Turf Moor in the Super Sunday clash.
The Clarets are the only side in England’s top four divisions yet to have tasted victory as the pre-season favourites for relegation have lived up to their billing so far.

Burnley midfielder Dean Marney remains a doubt for his side's Premier League clash with Everton.
Marney has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury and will be given a late test by the club's medical staff.
Steven Reid and Michael Keane are pushing for recalls after groin and hamstring problems respectively, but Matthew Taylor remains absent as he awaits an Achilles operation.
Naismith and Osman were left out of the travelling party for Thursday's Europa League trip to face Lille while Coleman was an unused substitute and McCarthy played only the last few minutes.
The Toffees have no new injury worries but Kevin Mirallas (hamstring) and John Stones (ankle) remain sidelined while Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kona are still not match-fit.

Simon Stevens interview: ‘The NHS is a social movement and not just a health care service’

From his offices, with their panoramic views of south London, Simon Stevens can see the scene of his happiest experience with the NHS so far – St Thomas’ hospital, where his wife, Maggie, gave birth to their son in 2003. “Because it was Christmas day, a lot of staff were off and there were locums. There was a bit of Christmas spirit, but a lot of planned deliveries not happening, so when my son was born they basically said, ‘If you and your wife want to go to an empty ward, you can spend the night there with your baby.’ In this darkened ward with no staff we spent a very happy first night.” The recollection prompts a smile.

Simon Stevens
He can also recall his worst moment. He was just seven. “I had a hip problem and was in hospital for the best part of a school term. It is a visceral memory. I woke one morning and I couldn’t walk. I crawled to my parents’ bedroom. They took a bit of persuading that I wasn’t just messing about, but we went to hospital. I still remember when the staff said to them, ‘OK, you can leave him now.’ That first night. I was just screaming: that complete sense of abandonment.”
It is Stevens’ blessing and his curse that everyone has a story about the NHS. Good accounts still outweigh the bad, but with funding at its tightest ever, waiting times deteriorating sharply, and GP waiting rooms and hospitals full to the rafters, how long will that be so?
This week, six months into his new job and amid much ballyhoo, Stevens unveiled the Five Year Forward View – his long-awaited blueprint for revolution in the NHS at a time of unprecedented pressure and hitherto unseen austerity. With the #NHS ailing, many question its future – can it keep up with an ageing population, ever higher expectations, ever harsher scrutiny? Stevens, 48, affable, chatty and sharp as a tack, thinks it can. He has come to save it.
And he has come a long way – 4,000 miles, to be precise, from the north-eastern US state of Minnesota, where he worked for nine years at United Health, the world’s largest private health company; as vice-president, he was responsible for its activities (some private, some both public and private) in the US, Europe and South America. Before that, however, he spent a much longer time in the NHS: he joined as a graduate management trainee in 1988, going on to run hospitals, community hospitals and psychiatric units, and later advising two Labour health secretaries, Frank Dobson and Alan Milburn, and then Tony Blair. But his track record at No 10, and especially within the commercialised #US health system, raises suspicions and hackles. When he was hired, the Health Service Journal, assessing his task and noting his capabilities, said he has the chance to be “one of the most important figures in the history of the NHS”. At the same time, Dr Richard Taylor, the former hospital consultant and former independent MP – now co-leader of the National Health Action party and fiercely anti-privatisation – called his ascension “the nail in the coffin” of the NHS.
Stevens laughs that off. “I decided this was an important moment for the NHS, something I care very deeply about,” he says. “I asked myself two questions: can the NHS make it, and is the job I am considering doable? I concluded yes to both.”

He has seen it at its most challenged, and at its most communal. “I started in Consett, County Durham. I lived in Consett and worked at the hospital – I went back there on my first day in this job on 1 April. It is a wonderful place, but [when I started] the steelworks had recently closed and the hospital was the biggest employer. There were interesting social changes on the back of that; ex-steelworkers were taking what was previously regarded as women’s work in the laundry.” He shared a flat with two junior doctors and the women who ran the laundry. They spent lots of time in the pub, part of a very tight community. “If you wanted an example of an NHS of the people, by the people, for the people, that is what you absolutely had in Consett.” Carless then, he travelled around by bus. “There was a lot of poverty and industrial-related illness; people with chronic lung problems, communities in some sense bypassed by the economic dislocations of the 1980s.” He carries the images, remembers the people.

Baseball Is No Longer the Center of Attention in a New Landscape

It may be America’s national pastime, but it has never felt less national.
On Tuesday night, the first game of the 2014 World Series drew just 12.2 million viewers to Fox, making it the lowest-rated Game 1 on record. Game 2 on Wednesday night fared somewhat better, with 12.9 million people tuning in.
For most of the last century, the start of baseball’s World Series — with its red, white and blue bunting and occasional ceremonial first pitch from the president — was always a major event. The opening game of the Fall Classic has provided some of the country’s most enduring sports memories, including Willie Mays’s over-the-shoulder basket catch (1954), Sandy Koufax’s 15-strikeout performance (1963) and Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run (1988).

The modest viewership thus far is partly a function of the matchup: the San Francisco Giants versus the Kansas City Royals. The Royals have one of the smallest TV markets in all of Major League Baseball. They are also pretty much devoid of boldface names, which may give the team added cachet among devotees but limits their appeal among casual fans.
“We are talking about at least one team that doesn’t have much of a national following,” said Neil Pilson, a former president of CBS Sports.
But in 1985, the last time the Royals played for the championship — and won — the games averaged 34.5 million viewers. (That team had George Brett at third base; this one has Mike Moustakas.) World Series ratings have been in a more or less steady decline since then. The last nine years have produced the eight least watched World Series. For stat buffs, the 1978 Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees was the most watched in the last four decades, with an average of more than 44 million viewers.
In some ways, baseball has never been stronger. The game has been free of labor strife for almost 20 years. Teams across the country are playing in new, taxpayer-subsidized stadiums. Attendance is robust, helped by the recent addition of two new wild-card teams to the postseason, which has kept more teams alive deeper into the fall.
A number of franchises have also recently secured lucrative, multiyear deals to have their games carried on local cable networks. The Dodgers, for instance, signed a deal with Time Warner Cable worth up to $8 billion over 25 years. In addition, franchises also share the pooled revenues from nationally televised games. Over the last 20 years, baseball’s annual revenues have grown to about $8 billion from under $2 billion.
Both Fox and M.L.B. emphasized that the audience totals now should include viewers watching in Spanish on the Fox Deportes cable channel. That would add just under 280,000 more viewers to the Game 1 total.

Ex-mountie and House of Commons sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers hailed a hero after shooting fanatic dead

IN his 29-year career as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman Kevin Vickers never used his gun.
But as the Canadian House of Commons’ sergeant-at-arms yesterday he drew his 9mm pistol to shoot dead the crazed gunman who had stormed the building after slaying a National War Memorial guard.
Today, the 58-year-old head of security was hailed a hero for firing the shots that brought down Islamic convert Michael Zehaf-Bibeau outside the doors of the library of the parliament and just steps from Mr Vickers’ own office.

When it seemed that the contention between the two men began to escalate, there was something not expected.

The event ended with handshakes took place in Belgium, and is doing laps through social networks.

Canadian killer had been identified as a terror risk before rampage at parliament

Witnesses describe seeing Michael Zehaf-Bibeau raise his arms in gesture of triumph after shooting dead soldier guarding war memorial in Ottawa.

Terror came to the heart of the Canadian capital Ottawa on Wednesday as a suspected jihadist gunman shot dead a soldier at the national war memorial and then rampaged through the halls of the federal parliament. The attacker, who was killed in a gun battle inside parliament, wasnamed as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Canadian-born 32-year-old.

He was a recent convert to Islam from Quebec with a history of drug abuse and whose passport had been seized by authorities after he was designated a "high-risk traveller", Canadian media reported.

Canada was already on edge after a radical Muslim convert killed a soldier and injured a second on Monday in a deliberate hit-and-run car attack in Quebec before being shot to death by police.

Kansas City Royals vowed to bounce back after the San Francisco Giants brought their perfect post-season to an emphatic end with a 7-1 win in Tuesday’s World Series opener at the Kauffman Stadium.Giants’ starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner, the MVP of the National League Championship Series, delivered a dominating seven innings of work and Hunter Pence slammed a two-run homer in the first inning that pushed the Royals into an early hole that they were unable to claw out of.

The Giants struck quickly against Shields with five hits in the opening frame, including a two-run shot from Pence and an RBI-double from Pablo Sandoval to lead 3-0. In the third, Bumgarner worked his way out of a jam after an error by shortstop Brandon Crawford and a double by Mike Moustakas put runners on second and third with none out. “That is one of my favourite things to be able to do in baseball, to work through a situation like that,” said Bumgarner. The 25-year-old struck out Alcides Escobar and contact hitter Nori Aoki and then got Eric Hosmer to ground out to snuff the threat without a run. Pence led off the fourth with a double and scored on a line drive single to centre from Michael Morse that chased Shields from the game. The reliever Danny Duffy issued a bases loaded walk to Gregor Blanco to push across another Giants run to make it 5-0. The Giants padded the lead in the seventh with Joe Panik and Sandoval driving in runs before Kansas City finally got on the scoreboard off Bumgarner in the bottom of the inning. Salvador Pérez homered over the wall in left, the solo shot ending Bumgarner’s post-season record of 32 and two-thirds scoreless innings pitched on the road. “Tonight, that was the last thing on my mind,” Bumgarner said about the streak. “We’re up 7-0, so I’m just trying to compete and go after guys and be aggressive.” Game two of the best-of-seven series is on Wednesday in Kansas City. Houston Rockets - Orlando Magic

The Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic play a Wednesday preseason game at the Amway Center.
With a loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday, the Houston Rockets fell to 4-2 in preseason play. In the loss, Dwight Howard had his most productive game of the preseason with 19 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes. James Harden also had a solid game with 19 points and three steals in 26 minutes of action. The Rockets clearly have their stars ready for the regular season. Jason Terry played in his second preseason game for Houston and has a combined nine points and three steals in two games. One player the Rockets have to be pleased with is Patrick Beverley, who continues to play shutdown defense and doing a nice job of setting up his teammates on the offensive end. The Houston Rockets seem ready for the regular season to begin.

Elfrid Payton is 5-13 from the field in his last three games and Aaron Gordon is 13-26 from the field in his last three games. You have to be pleased with what you’ve seen from the Magic so far, a team that doesn’t have the highest of expectations.

65 best and worst decisions of Wenger's career

65 best and worst decisions of Arsene Wenger's career

On the Arsenal manager's 65th birthday we analyse the best and worst decisions he has made all the way from his university days to the current first team Highs and lows: Arsene Wenger has been synonymous with Arsenal since taking charge of the club in 1996

Wenger’s arrival in English football owed much to chance. He was passing through London in January 1989 and took in a match at Highbury. Dein, then Arsenal’s vice-chairman, invited him to a friend’s house for dinner and, over charades, a friendship was formed that led to him being appointed Arsenal manager and which has lasted to this day.

Champions League Liverpool & Ronaldo's bogey teams

Liverpool, Chelsea and the teams Ronaldo has struggled to score against
Cristiano Ronaldo is in the form of his life for #RealMadrid. With 19 goals in 12 games in all competitions this season, the 29-year-old is virtually unstoppable right now.
And, having hit an incredible 271 goals in 258 appearances since signing for Madrid from Manchester United in 2009, and a total of 394 club goals in 581 career games, it is fair to say that Ronaldo is not scared of any opponent.

Liverpool, Chelsea and the teams Ronaldo has struggled to score against

However, there are some teams who have fared well against the current Ballon d'Or holder - and one of those is Wednesday's Champions League opponents, Liverpool.
In nine games against the Reds - all of which came during his six seasons at Manchester United - #Ronaldo scored just two goals. He has never registered at Anfield, the venue of this midweek's game.
Ronaldo's most difficult opponents have been Chelsea. He has scored just once in 15 games against the Blues, although that solitary strike arrived in United's 2008 Champions League final triumph in Moscow.
